LOS ANGELES ? Michel Hazanavicius has won the top film honor at the Directors Guild of America Awards for his silent movie "The Artist," giving him the inside track for the best-director prize at the Academy Awards.
French filmmaker Hazanavicius, whose credits include the "OSS 117" spy spoofs, had been a virtual unknown in Hollywood until "The Artist," his black-and-white throwback to early cinema that has been a favorite at earlier film honors.
The Directors Guild honors are one of the most-accurate forecasts for who might go on to take home an Oscar. Only six times in the 63-year history of the guild awards has the winner failed to win the Oscar for best director. And more often than not, whichever film earns the directing Oscar also wins best picture.

Our internal representation of the world is flat
By Morgen Peck ?| January 29, 2012?|

When we drive somewhere new, we navigate by referring to a two-dimensional map that accounts for distances only on a horizontal plane. According to research published online in August in Nature Neuroscience, the mammalian brain seems to do the same, collapsing the world into a flat plane even as the animal skitters up trees and slips deep into burrows.
?Our subjective sense that our map is three-dimensional is illusory,? says Kathryn Jeffery, a behavioral neuroscientist at University College London who led the research. Jeffery studies a collection of neurons in and around the rat hippo?campus that build an internal representation of space. As the animal travels, these neurons, called grid cells and place cells, respond uniquely to distance, turning on and off in a way that measures how far the animal has moved in a particular direction.
Past research has focused on how these cartographic cells encode two-dimensional space. Jeffery and her col?leagues decided to look at how they respond to changes in altitude. To do this, they enticed rats to climb up a spiral staircase while the scientists collected electrical recordings from single cells. The firing pattern encoded very little in?formation about height.
The finding adds evidence for the hypothesis that the brain keeps track of our location on a flat plane, which is defined by the way the body is oriented. If a squirrel, say, is running along the ground, then scampers straight up a tree, its internal two-dimensional map simply shifts from the horizontal plane to the vertical. Astronauts are some of the few humans to de?scribe this experience: when they move in space to ?stand? on a ceiling, they report a moment of disorientation before their mental map flips so they feel right side up again.
Researchers do not know yet whether other areas of the brain encode altitude or whether mammals simply do not need that information to survive. ?Maybe an animal has a mosaic of maps, each fragment of which is flat but which can be oriented in the way that?s appropriate,? Jeffery speculates. Or maybe in our head, the world is simply flat.

LOS ANGELES ? A 911 recording revealed frantic efforts by friends of Demi Moore to get help for the actress who was convulsing as they gathered around her and tried to comfort her.
Moore was "semi-conscious, barely," according to a female caller on the recording released Friday by Los Angeles fire officials.
The woman tells emergency operators that Moore, 49, had smoked something before she was rushed to the hospital on Monday night and that she had been "having issues lately."
"Is she breathing normal?" the operator asks.
"No, not so normal. More kind of shaking, convulsing, burning up," the friend says as she hurries to Moore's side, on the edge of panic.
Another woman is next to Moore as the dispatcher asks if she's responsive.
"Demi, can you hear me?" she asks. "Yes, she's squeezing hands. ... She can't speak."
When the operator asks what Moore ingested or smoked, the friend replies, but the answer was redacted.
Asked if Moore took the substance intentionally or not, the woman says Moore ingested it on purpose but the reaction was accidental.
"Whatever she took, make sure you have it out for the paramedics," the operator says.
The operator asks the friend if this has happened before.
"I don't know," she says. "There's been some stuff recently that we're all just finding out."
Moore's publicist, Carrie Gordon, said previously that the actress sought professional help to treat her exhaustion and improve her health. She would not comment further on the emergency call or provide details about the nature or location of Moore's treatment.
The past few months have been rocky for Moore.
She released a statement in November announcing she had decided to end her marriage to fellow actor Ashton Kutcher, 33, following news of alleged infidelity. The two were known to publicly share their affection for one another via Twitter.
Moore still has a Twitter account under the name mrskutcher but has not posted any messages since Jan. 7.
Meanwhile, Millennium Films announced Friday that Sarah Jessica Parker will replace Moore in the role of feminist Gloria Steinem in its production of "Lovelace," a biopic about the late porn star Linda Lovelace. A statement gave no reason for the change. The production, starring Amanda Seyfried, has been shooting in Los Angeles since Dec. 20.
During the call, the woman caller says the group of friends had turned Moore's head to the side and was holding her down. The dispatcher tells her not to hold her down but to wipe her mouth and nose and watch her closely until paramedics arrive.
"Make sure that we keep an airway open," the dispatcher says. "Even if she passes out completely, that's OK. Stay right with her."
The phone is passed around by four people, including a woman who gives directions to the gate and another who recounts details about what Moore smoked or ingested. Finally, the phone is given to a man named James, so one of the women can hold Moore's head.
There was some confusion at the beginning of the call. The emergency response was delayed by nearly two minutes as Los Angeles and Beverly Hills dispatchers sorted out which city had jurisdiction over the street where Moore lives.
As the call is transferred to Beverly Hills, the frantic woman at Moore's house raises her voice and said, "Why is an ambulance not on its way right now?"
"Ma'am, instead of arguing with me why an ambulance is not on the way, can you spell (the street name) for me?" the Beverly Hills dispatcher says.
Although the estate is located in the 90210 ZIP code above Benedict Canyon, the response was eventually handled by the Los Angeles Fire Department.
By the end of the call, Moore has improved.
"She seems to have calmed down now. She's speaking," the male caller told the operator.
Moore and Kutcher were wed in September 2005.
Kutcher became a stepfather to Moore's three daughters ? Rumer, Scout and Tallulah Belle ? from her 13-year marriage to actor Bruce Willis. Moore and Willis divorced in 2000 but remained friendly.
Moore can be seen on screen in the recent films "Margin Call" and "Another Happy Day." Kutcher replaced Charlie Sheen on TV's "Two and a Half Men" and is part of the ensemble film "New Year's Eve."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A weak year for the economy likely ended on a hopeful note.
The economy likely grew at annual rate of 3 percent in the October-December quarter, according to a survey by FactSet. The Commerce Department will release the actual figure Friday.
The gain would represent modest improvement from this summer, when the economy grew just 1.8 percent. However, even with the strong finish, economists believe the economy expanded just 1.7 percent for the whole year ? roughly half the growth in 2010.
And growth is expected to slow in the first three months of this year. A key reason is wages have failed to keep pace with inflation. That will likely force many consumers to pull back on spending after splurging over the holidays.
Consumer spending is important because it makes up 70 percent of economic activity.
Businesses are also expected to reduce spending in the first quarter after building up their stockpiles in the final months of 2011.
Richard DeKaiser, a senior economist at Parthenon Group, expects just 2 percent annual growth in the January-March quarter. But Kaiser says that should be the weakest quarter. He expects the economy to gain strength in each quarter and grow 2.6 percent for the entire year.
The year is off to a good start. Companies invested more in equipment and machinery in December. The unemployment rate fell to 8.5 percent last month ? the lowest level in nearly three years ? after the sixth straight month of solid hiring.
People are buying more cars, and consumer confidence is rising. Even the depressed housing market has shown enough improvement to make some economists predict a turnaround has begun.
Still, many economists worry that a recession in Europe could dampen demand for U.S. manufactured goods, which would slow growth. And without more jobs and better pay, consumer spending is likely to stagnate.
The Federal Reserve signaled this week that a full recovery could take at least three more years. In response, it said it would probably not increase its benchmark interest rate until late 2014 at the earliest ? a year and a half later than it had previously said.
The central bank also slightly reduced its outlook for growth this year, from as much as 2.9 percent forecast in November down to 2.7 percent. The Fed sees unemployment falling as low as 8.2 percent this year.
DeKaiser said part of his optimism stems from a view that housing sales and prices will rise moderately this year. That should lift the battered construction industry, which ended last year with three months of gains in single-family home construction.(backslash)
At the moment, housing remains the weakest part of the economy. New-home sales fell last month, and total sales for 2011 were the lowest on records dating back to 1963.
"I think the clouds will gradually lift over housing. Rising home prices will make consumers feel wealthier and this will translate into stronger consumer spending," DeKaiser said.

According to a report from Apple?enthusiast?site 9to5Mac, the next revision of the iPhone will be hitting store shelves during the summer months of this year. This release window would align with the upcoming contract expiration date of 1.7 million AT&T customers that purchased the iPhone 4 within the first three days of release on June 24, 2010. The same source that provided this information to?9to5Mac also predicted that the iPhone 4S was going to be the only iPhone model announced during 2011 prior to Apple?s fall event last year. The?Foxconn employee also indicated that the new model is currently prepping for full production and a variety of pre-production designs have been distributed among management at the facility.?
The source also indicated that the new version of the iPhone will offer a 4-inch screen rather than the 3.5-inch screen found on the iPhone 4S. In addition, LG may be manufacturing the screen for the final version. In addition, none of the models utilize the?teardrop-shape design as seen on the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. The pre-production models also don?t resemble the form factor of the iPhone 4 or the iPhone 4S.
While the launch of a new iPhone model less than a year after?the release date of the iPhone 4S?may?cannibalize?sales, Apple may be?anxious?to launch support for?4G LTE networks on AT&T, Verizon and Sprint on the new device. In fact, Apple could even call the new device the iPhone 4G rather than the iPhone 5. However, yesterday?s earnings call paints a rosy picture for Apple?s iPhone 4S. With just over 37 million iPhones sold during the fourth quarter of 2011, the majority of those models were the iPhone 4S according to CEO Tim Cook. Regarding the iPhone 4S, Cook stated ?We made a very bold bet entering the quarter as to what the demand would be. And as it turns out, despite it being a very bold bet, we were short of supply throughout the quarter and did end with a significant backlog.??

In his State of the Union address last night, President Barack Obama spent less time than in years past discussing his ambitions to reform science education. He referred to his administration?s offer to let states?opt out of ?No Child Left Behind (? ? grant schools flexibility to teach with creativity and passion; to stop teaching to the test ??). And he brought up the Common Core State Standards in math and language arts which 45 states plus the District of Columbia have now adopted (?we?ve convinced nearly every state in the country to raise their standards for teaching and learning ? the first time that?s happened in a generation?). (By the way, a state survey out today from the Center on Education Policy reports that most states believe the new standards will improve students? skills in math, reading and writing but that many are struggling to pay for new curricula and teacher training).
I asked science education experts to weigh in on the president?s remarks. More will be sending in reactions throughout the day, so check back. And please leave your own comments below.

President Obama understands both science and education more than any President in American history. His speech on Tuesday night included an important reminder of the importance of funding basic research. This year, he linked the need for expanded scientific and technical education with the revival of manufacturing employment in the U.S. This is an important linkage, but it is the first step in a longer process. The President argues that there are open jobs requiring technical skills and that community college programs can prepare students (younger and older) for these positions. This is a necessary short-term fix, but I expect that the President and Secretary Duncan know that an associate degree is not a ticket for long-term employment. The growth of science and technology will continue to demand higher levels of skill and education and associate degree programs designed in response to this initiative should be built as the first step toward a baccalaureate and post-graduate degrees. It is encouraging to have a President that understands and values both science and education and who welcomes the challenges of the 21st century.
?
Sharon Lynch,?Professor, George Washington University Graduate School of Education and Human Development;?President-Elect, National Association for Research in Science Teaching
The President?s 2012 State of the? Union Speech was more about the economy and jobs than new programs in education. How to see the American Dream fulfilled unless you are the lucky child of a venture capitalist or banker? Social mobility and personal prosperity is likely going to involve work in a high tech industry or one that moves the U.S. closer to energy independence?STEM-related jobs and careers. There are at least twice as many such jobs going unfilled due to a work force that is not sufficiently STEM literate or not located where the jobs are. Increasingly, states and municipalities understand that the New American Community is likely going to involve business-education partnerships, including ?Big High Tech Businesses? that produce high value items using new technologies, and linked to local education systems flexible and innovative enough to teach both adults and children. While the President did not dwell on specifics of these partnerships, our work on inclusive STEM-focused high schools suggests three things may be needed. The first challenge is how to ramp up the E (engineering) in STEM education. If the US does not have enough engineers, then it certainly does not have enough K-12 teachers able to teach engineering. This leads to second challenge; provided that we finally adopt (voluntary) common core science standards and assessments, we are also going to need new integrated, coherent K-12 STEM curriculum materials. There hasn?t been a major curriculum reform in decades (excepting innovative mathematics curricula). New STEM curriculum tools won?t look like those tired textbooks of the past, and put in the hands of creative and innovative teachers, should allow teachers strong in STEM disciplines the freedom to avoid re-inventing the curriculum wheel each day. These new materials would also provide video examples of how to teach integrated STEM. They would use technologies that are commonplace to anyone under the age of 25, introducing students to the boundless world of STEM possibilities, either during the school day or anytime outside of it. It is not hard to imagine bilingual materials that could help English Language Learners access STEM concepts and activities, escaping the isolation of mono-English classrooms. Moreover, these new materials would boost the ability and confidence of elementary school teachers who do not have adequate STEM backgrounds to teach more than reading and math computation. That leads to the third challenge, issues of scale and implementation. Currently each state struggles to produce its own standards, frameworks, assessments and curricula. This is hugely expensive and demonstrably ineffective. Why not provide educators with the choice to use the best set of curriculum materials that the nation can develop, a huge economy of scale? The third challenge is to stimulate local communities to come together to develop innovative variations that match their settings and the needs of their children. Business and community partnerships, including the arts councils and museums, would provide the rigor, the relevance and the relationships that allow all children to have a shot at the American Dream.
Adam V. Maltese, Assistant Professor of Science Education, Indiana University
In his SoTU address President Obama declared ?The State of our Union is getting stronger.? While he attempted to defend this statement throughout the rest of his speech, education ? specifically STEM education ? did not get nearly as much focus as it did last year. The President threw out some provocative ? but not new ? ideas for K-12 including suggestion of a requirement to keep all students in school until they graduate high school or turn 18. The President also said we should keep the good teachers and reward the best. Sure! I?m on board with this, but how do we do this fairly and effectively?
As usual, the speech left me with more questions than answers. The focus of much of the edu-speak within the address was on higher education and higher costs for earning degrees. This is also where one of the President?s points raised my greatest concern with relation to STEM issues. President Obama laid down an edict to colleges and universities to halt increases in tuition or risk the loss of funding from taxpayers. While it?s not within the purview of the federal government to determine budgets for public institutions of higher education, our state government in Indiana is a few steps ahead of the President and already cut higher ed funding for the last few years. My concern here is that continued reductions in funding will ultimately affect the availability of money to attract top science faculty and students, to build state of the art research facilities, and for educational outreach efforts. Additionally, this will likely impact the availability of internal seed money used to fund ideas and efforts that often lead to the large scale R&D projects the President and other politicians love to tout.
James Gentile, President and CEO of?Research Corporation for Science Advancement
U.S. economic preeminence has depended for more than a century on scientific and technological innovation, and President Obama addressed key issues for sustaining our leadership in global innovation. In his ?blueprint for an economy that?s built to last?, he reminded the nation that ?innovation also demands basic research? and called on Congress to ?support the same kind of research and innovation that led to the computer chip and the Internet.? He focused heavily on improving education and job readiness, setting a goal of training ?two million Americans with skills that will lead directly to a job?, noting that ?growing industries in science and technology have twice as many openings as we have workers who can do the job.? Citing the role that foreign students play in research labs, he called on Congress to ?stop expelling responsible young people who want to staff our labs.? And he emphasized his commitment to clean energy, a field ripe for innovation, saying, ?I will not cede the wind or solar or battery industry to China or Germany.? The foundation that I lead is in the forefront of supporting scientific innovation in solar energy conversion, and the President is right to advocate U.S. leadership in clean energy technologies. Innovation is the key to American jobs.
Francis Eberle, Executive Director, National Science Teachers Association
Last night in his SOTU address, President Obama called for more skilled workers in the?science and technology industry and announced a national commitment to training 2 million Americans in these and other areas. He talked about new?science and technology innovations needed to help companies grow jobs and about increasing basic research funding?in the sciences. The Administration wants to support 600k new?science jobs with new clean energy sources that will reduce our dependency on foreign oil. The president is? also seeking support from Congress so that?engineers can rebuild the roads and bridges that make up our nation?s infrastructure. Although science education wasn?t mentioned specifically, its pretty clear that the jobs of tomorrow and much of our future depends on STEM, and STEM education.

UPDATE: That was fast. Dionisio Soldevila of the?Associated Press was told by?Cespedes? representative,?Edgar Mercedes, that not only has the Cuban outfielder established residency in the Dominican Republic, he has also officially been granted free agency by MLB.?In fact, Cespedes stopped playing in the Dominican Winter League playoffs at the urging of MLB teams.
We haven?t heard any clarification from MLB on the matter, so it?s possible Mercedes may have jumped the gun,?but it?s safe to say things are about to heat up.
6:26 PM: While the Prince Fielder sweepstakes has finally reached a resolution, the bidding for?Yoenis Cespedes is just about to begin.
Cespedes? representative,?Edgar Mercedes, told Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com that the Cuban outfielder has finally established residency in the Dominican Republic. He is now waiting on approval from MLB to become a free agent.
Cespedes recently told?Dionisio Soldevila of the Associated Press that the Cubs,?Marlins, White Sox, Orioles, Tigers and Indians have shown the most interest in him. However, it?s possible the Tigers will be less willing to pony up after agreeing to a nine-year, $214 million contract with Fielder earlier today. Still, most expect the 26-year-old outfielder will end up with a contract richer than the $30.25 million deal Cuban left-hander Aroldis Chapman signed with the Reds two years ago.
Cespedes, 26, recently went 5-for-35 (.143) with one home run and a 10/0 K/BB ratio during a stint with Aguilas?Cibaenas in the Dominican Winter League playoffs. While it?s unlikely the poor performance will have a significant impact on his asking price, it wouldn?t be surprising if he needs some seasoning in the minor leagues.

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (Reuters) ? Newt Gingrich didn't just beat Mitt Romney in Saturday's South Carolina primary, the former House speaker kicked away one of the main pillars of his rival's election campaign.
Exit polling data shows Gingrich convinced voters he would be the toughest Republican opponent against President Barack Obama in the November general election.
Electability - Republican campaign-speak for a candidate's ability to beat Obama - had been one of Romney's top selling points until Saturday.
Conventional wisdom was that the former Massachusetts governor's emphasis on jobs and the economy and his perceived appeal to independents would help him against Gingrich, who is often seen as erratic and divisive.
But Gingrich's combative style in debates resonated with voters keen for a heavyweight debater to take on Obama, who is grudgingly respected by Republicans as a formidable campaigner.
This may also be helping Gingrich's message on the economy gain traction, exit polling data showed.
South Carolina's Republicans rated the ability to beat Obama as a candidate's most important quality, an exit poll on CNN showed.
Forty-five percent of voters said that was the main attribute they sought in a nominee. Of that group, 51 percent voted for Gingrich compared to 37 percent for Romney.
Twenty-one percent of South Carolina voters said the quality that mattered most to them in their candidate was that he had the right experience.
"It is electability, and that is measured in your ability to effectively debate and prosecute your case against Obama," said Republican strategist Matt Mackowiak.
Exit polls also showed that for 63 percent of South Carolina voters the most important issue was the economy. Gingrich won this group by a margin of eight percentage points over Romney.
The attraction of Gingrich as an anti-Obama candidate may be the factor that increased his ratings on other issues like the economy, Mackowiak said.
Attacks on Obama in recent weeks, including dubbing him "a foodstamp president," endeared Gingrich to voters in a state with unemployment of almost 10 percent.
OLD TIMER WITH EXPERIENCE
"He is an old timer with a lot of political experience. He's the only one who can beat Obama," said Jim Walters, a retired marine owner in the town of Aiken.
Gingrich slammed Obama as "truly a danger to the country" in his South Carolina victory speech and promised to bring down Obama in a series of long debates.
A master of the sharp turn of phrase who talks in big broad sweeps, the former House speaker was the clear star of the more than 20 Republican debates in recent months.
He left Romney floundering, particularly during two televised contests in South Carolina this week where the millionaire former executive stumbled over questions about his personal finances.
Republican voters in South Carolina, a conservative state with a taste for rough and tumble politics, lapped it up.
"I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that people really want to see Newt debate Obama," Mackowiak said.
"It reminds me of gladiators. You see an amazing gladiator have a string of victories in the middle of the Coliseum so you really want to see him go up against the biggest, baddest gladiator there is."
In a sign that Gingrich's well-documented marital infidelities might have created a problem with female voters, exit polls showed Gingrich held an advantage over Romney of 16 points among men but only 9 points among women.

On the one-year anniversary of Egypt's uprising, the world is less free because dictators reacted to the Arab Spring. But at least now they are on notice, forcing the issue of democracy.
One year ago on Jan. 25, Egypt began a popular uprising that, in just 18 days, felled a longtime dictator. The stunning event, which reversed old notions about Arabs being apathetic toward freedom, still radiates hope to those living under suppression.
Skip to next paragraphBut it had another effect. It forced the world?s remaining dictators to go on the defensive. They worried that the Arab Spring had planted a moral seed. Their own people might now realize that they, too, deserve to be free and can organize through social media and on the streets to achieve it. A mental self-censorship had been lifted. And the outside world just might help them.
Over the past year, regimes from China to Morocco have cracked down harder on dissent and the Internet, or they have tried to co-opt their people by throwing money at them or making minimal political reforms.
The result, oddly enough, is that there has been less freedom worldwide since the Arab Spring began, according to a report by the think tank Freedom House, which measures such things.
Take China, for example. The report sums up Beijing?s reaction to the events of Cairo?s Tahrir Square as ?a near-hysterical campaign of arrests, incommunicado detentions, press censorship, and stepped-up control over the Internet.?
But such overreactions may be hopeful. ?The aura of invincibility has been undermined? by the Arab uprising, says Freedom House vice president Arch Puddington. Harsh rulers are being forced to justify their rule, pushing them deeper into a corner, which then might force a final resolution.
Good ideas like freedom have a way of propagating themselves and forcing evil to the surface where it can be more easily lanced. But caution is still needed to prevent new democracies from relapsing.
The European revolutions of 1848 were suppressed, and most of the former Soviet states that were liberated after 1991 are still mostly not free. But those are balanced by the waves of democratization in Latin America and Asia starting in the 1970s, and then in Eastern Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

KANO, Nigeria (Reuters) ? The Islamist sect Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for coordinated bomb attacks on security forces in the north Nigerian city of Kano that killed seven people late Friday.
The attacks prompted the government to announce a dusk-to-dawn curfew in the city of more than 10 million people.
Kano, like other cities in the north, has been plagued by an insurgency led by Boko Haram, which is blamed for scores of bombings and shootings, aimed mainly at government targets, that are growing in scale and sophistication.
A spokesman for Boko Haram contacted reporters in the northeast city of Maiduguri, where the sect is based, to claim responsibility for the attacks. A letter was also dropped around Kano, which appeared to be from the group.
The letter, written in the Hausa language spoken in northern Nigeria, said the attacks were retribution for police arrests and killings of members of the sect.
"At the moment, seven casualties have been confirmed from different locations of the attacks," police media officer Olusola Amore said in a statement.
The statement said the police "are doing their best to bring the situation under control ... (we are) appealing to members of the public to come forward with information on the identity and location of these hoodlums."
The police said eight buildings were attacked, including police headquarters, three police stations, the headquarters of the secret services and the immigration head office.
Witnesses said smoke billowed from the police headquarters after the blast blew out its windows, wrecked its roof and triggered a blaze that firefighters struggled to control.
Boko Haram became active around 2003 and is concentrated in the northern states of Yobe, Kano, Bauchi, Borno and Kaduna.
Boko Haram, a Hausa term meaning "Western education is sinful," is loosely modelled on the Taliban movement in Afghanistan.
The sect originally said it wanted sharia, Islamic law, to be applied more widely across Africa's most populous nation but its aims have changed. Recent messages from its leaders have said it is attacking anyone who opposes it, at present mainly police, government and Christian groups.
A bomb attack on a Catholic church just outside the capital Abuja on Christmas Day, claimed by Boko Haram, killed 37 people and wounded 57.
The main suspect in that attack, Kabiru Sokoto, escaped from police custody within 24 hours of his arrest, and police have offered a 50 million naira ($309,600) reward for information leading to his recapture.
Police arrested him Tuesday and he escaped when their vehicle came under fire as they were taking him from police headquarters to his house in Abaji, just outside Abuja, to conduct a search there.
Last August a suicide bomber blew up the U.N. Nigeria headquarters in Abuja, killing at least 24 people.
There were two explosions in the southern state of Bayelsa in the oil-producing Niger Delta late Friday but no one was killed. Local police said the attacks were not linked to Boko Haram.
Bayelsa, the home state of President Goodluck Jonathan, is holding a governorship election next month. Troops have been deployed in the state in recent weeks to stem any political unrest.

TOKYO ? Olympus Corp. will not be kicked off the Tokyo Stock Exchange, but the camera and medical device maker must pay a fine for covering up massive losses with false accounting, exchange officials said Friday.
Olympus will be monitored by the exchange as a security on "Alert" because significant improvements must be made in its internal control systems, it said in an emailed statement.
Olympus faced removal from the stock exchange following revelations of a scheme by the Tokyo-based company to hide 117.7 billion yen ($1.5 billion) in investment losses dating back to the 1990s.
The scandal came to light late last year after then-President Michael Woodford raised questions about huge payments for financial advice and expensive acquisitions of companies unrelated to the company's mainstay businesses. Olympus first denied, then affirmed the allegations.
The TSE said that even though the deception was perpetuated over a long period, it "cannot be deemed to have caused significant misinterpretation of profit levels or performance trends" given the size of the company. "The improper accounting practices had generally no effect on sales or operating profit."
Olympus was also slapped with a 10 million yen ($130,000) penalty because its actions damaged investor confidence in the stock market, the statement said, castigating the company for "using devious methods."

We?ve previously predicted that, once running back LaDainian Tomlinson severs all ties with the Jets, his interview will be more compelling than a Jim Irsay tweet.
But it appears that, instead of one epic sit-down meltdown, L.T. will bleed out the details in a series of engagements and appearances.
Over the weekend, Tomlinson touched on some of the issues during a guest spot on ESPN?s Sunday NFL Countdown.? For the latest episode of Showtime?s Inside the NFL (via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News), L.T. pulls no punches.
As to the relationship between quarterback Mark Sanchez and receiver Santonio Holmes, Tomlinson said, ?It is as bad as I?ve ever been around, honestly.? You know it was at the point where I think the players could no longer do anything about it.? There was nothing that the players could do.? So when it gets to that point there are certain changes that need to happen.? Can it be fixed? . . .? I think absolutely it can be.? But they?re going to have to make some tough decisions.?
The tough decisions may include whether to keep both men on the same team.
?I would really have to sit down with them and see if they can co-exist,? Tomlinson said.? ?I mean that is a decision that I really have to make.? And if I really feel like they can?t, then you have to make a move. . . .? There are some things that obviously [Holmes] needs to work on as far as being a leader.?
Tomlinson previously criticized Holmes for his behavior during a Week 17 loss to the Dolphins.? ?I?ll tell you what, it?s tough for guys to follow a captain that kind of behaves in that manner,? Tomlinson said at the time.? ?When you?re a captain, guys are looking at you, you?ve got to lead by example. You?ve got to play your tail off until the last play.? And when that don?t happen, you have guys looking at you in a way that captains shouldn?t be looked at.?
The Jets owe Holmes $7.75 million in guaranteed salary for 2012.? If he?s on the roster in March 2012, another $7.5 million in base salary becomes guaranteed in 2013.
Tomlinson thinks the front office shouldn?t be surprised by the situation.? ?They created this,? Tomlinson said.? ?This is the type of football team that they wanted.? Mike Tannenbaum [and] Rex Ryan are both brash, in-your-face type of style, say whatever you want, just get it done on the field.? And then it leads to other things [like] guys are calling each other out and saying I?m not getting the ball or whatever it may be.?
The reference to ?not getting the ball? surely means that Holmes didn?t think he was getting enough looks from Sanchez, a dynamic about which we reported during the season.? Near the end of the season, we reported that the Jets would privately consider alternatives to Sanchez.
So it?s unclear whether Holmes will go or Sanchez will go.? For now, the Jets have said that both men will stay.
Of course, that?s the same thing they said about former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

Gardeners have an inherent quality of being in love, perpetually, with nature. Their love for foliage can go beyond the religious mowing and mulching activities. It is a passion for plants that, perhaps no words could justify. Most nature lovers share the same sentiments towards animals. However, trouble knocks when you love both, and want them to coexist. You know that your pet, your best friend, exercises his liberty to carry out inquisitive excursions through the garden, and he is highly capable of making a mess of your garden. In addition to this, your gruff mood. Well, it?s a different question altogether now. So what do you do, for the sake of designing a pet-friendly garden? To help you rest in peace, (pun not intended), explained here are pet-cum-garden-friendly ideas that will have your pet and your greens thrive together.
Creating a Pet-friendly Garden
To have a pet safe garden, you must have a good plan. A feasible plan is one that lets your pet fool around without causing any damage to your precious greens. Your plan should club your garden?s safety and your pet?s interest. Sounds tough? Don?t believe me? Then scroll through? to believe it yourself!
Path-ecology
Pets, more often than not, have their favorite path to wander. They, in the actual, love to have a path that leads them, rather than they creating a path of their own. However, I would advise that before you plan to construct one, try to study ?his path?. By his path, I mean, that your doggie, while roaming around the garden, has paved a way for himself. If you notice that he has a definite route, consider your job half done. All you are left with, is laying the pavement. Providing a stipulated doggie path can save your saplings from being stomped heavily and bearing the brunt of your pooch. Your pet?s pleasure would know no bounds and your plants can breathe peacefully as well!
Hanging Gardens
When digging serves to be your doggie?s ?first love?, you, the poor gardener is bound to get perturbed. However, there is good news, if you don?t want to see your pet and your plants crossing each other?s paths, then why not have your plants hung in baskets or containers above the ground, away from the pet?s reach. Twining a trellis is also a good idea if you possess climbers. Your furry pal is sure to find the task of messing your plants up there quite difficult.
Just Jig, Don?t Dig
Digging is an activity that, gardeners wish did not exist in their canine?s instincts. However, let?s face the fact. They are good diggers, so why not dedicate an area that can serve as their ?play? station. Plant a grass cover to ward off the weeds. You could lay his little fiddles there and join him while he jigs with his belongings. Gradually, you will notice that your pet recognizes his designated play area and puts up his antiques there.
Potty-ing Grounds
In the name of protecting your garden from pet poop, designating a section for this purpose is advisable. Assign a place, dug specifically for your pet, to do the honors and accompany him when he has to attend the call of nature. Going along with your pet for a few days will help in conditioning him to visit the same spot. This will keep your garden feces-free. Another inclusion to your garden, especially for cats, would be placing a log or two, meant specially for your kitty to sharpen her claws, thus demarcating her area.
Go Organic
Curiosity kills the cat, an adage of sorts that fits in here perfectly. Pets have an interrogatory attitude that can land them in trouble. Digging and sniffing are major feats they perform while strolling in the garden. Thus, the use of harmful pesticides and fertilizers can spell danger for your pet. Cocoa mulch, used for landscaping contains a poisonous substance called theobromine. This ingredient can cause muscle stiffness and vomiting, leading to death. To ensure that your plants receive the required nutrition and your pet is safe and sound, use organic products that don?t mean harm to pet health. Instead of cocoa, you may use cedar or pine mulch to nourish your plants.
Touch-me-Not
How you wish your plants could say that to your pets, while they put their heart and soul to blob out the plant. Anyway, let?s think about what?s possible. What about citrus fruit peel, or eucalyptus, or better still, neem oil. Possible? Oh yes, you can sprinkle either eucalyptus or neem oil when you want to secure your plants from the pulling sessions. These are natural products and absolutely cruelty-free. To keep your doggie from prying on your saplings, you could also place tomato cages around them.
Shady Body
All those who have heard that pets love to bask in the sun, have heard it right. However, pets do not appreciate the sunshine all throughout. They would love to roll in the shade too. Consider adding some shade in the form of a large plant, or a tree to your landscape. An outdoor beach umbrella can add freshness to the landscape and let your pet enjoy the shade as well. While the hot summer sun shines, your dog can snatch a cool snooze in there. In addition, your plants are safe too.
Aqua-Sure
Provide fresh and clean water regularly for your pet. This also helps you in enhancing the landscape as you construct, two to three tiny water bodies that resemble the shape of a pudding bowl. Also, where water bodies reside, the area around, maintains a consistency in temperature. This place will thus, be marked by him, as his very own turf. And for those scorching days, your pet can quench his thirst and feel refreshed once again.
Take a Dip
If your garden has a pool, chances are that your canine companion too is fond of taking a dip into the pool. While it is all sunny and scorching, your pet would prefer to dive in, rather than roll on the garden greens. You can rest assured that, besides the sun, there is nothing else bothering your garden or plants. Nevertheless, it is required that you train your canine to adhere to your order of entering and exiting the pool, only when you are around. Construct a ladder that leads him in and lets him out. Although, dogs are good swimmers, it is a must that you supervise them when they are at it. To ensure upgraded safety, create a fence around the pool with a considerable space for the ladder. Water bodies, not to forget, add a touch of serenity to the garden and are a favorite of many landscape lovers too.
Blunder Plants
This one?s a big no-no. You should be aware of plants that can be toxic for your pet and ensure that you don?t plant them in your garden. Castor beans, rhododendron, jasmine, crab apple, garlic and yew are some plants that could cause cardiac problems for your pet. Thorny and bushy plants are great topiary additions, however they may prove hurtful to your pet.
With these ideas for designing a landscape garden, that is pet and plant-friendly, you could forge ahead and have a space where you, the gardener, your flora and fauna coexist and prosper. Now, that?s called a true nature patriot, aren?t we!

LONDON ? An extremist cleric described as one of Europe's leading al-Qaida operatives should not be deported to face terrorism charges in Jordan because of the risk evidence obtained through torture would be used against him, Europe's highest court ruled Tuesday.
After a six-year legal battle, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that deporting Abu Qatada from Britain ? where he is in prison custody ? would "give rise to a flagrant denial of justice."
Abu Qatada ? whose real name is Omar Mahmoud Mohammed Othman ? is an extremist Muslim preacher from Jordan who has been described in both Spanish and British courts as a leading al-Qaida figure in Europe.
A Palestinian-Jordanian citizen, Abu Qatada arrived in Britain in 1993 and was detained in 2002 under anti-terrorism laws which at the time allowed suspected terrorists to be held in jail without charge.
Though Abu Qatada was released in 2005, when the unpopular law was overturned, he was kept under surveillance and arrested again within months, to be held pending his deportation to face terrorism charges in Jordan.
He was convicted in his absence in Jordan of terrorist offenses related to two alleged bomb plots in 1999 and 2000, and would face a retrial if deported there from Britain.
Although Abu Qatada has never faced criminal charges in Britain, authorities in the U.K. have accused him of advising militants and raising money for terrorist attacks. He "is a leading spiritual adviser with extensive links to, and influence over, extreme Islamists in the U.K. and overseas," prosecutors told a British court in 2007.
Britain's Home Secretary Theresa May said she was disappointed by the ruling and the government would consider appealing the European court's decision. It has a three-month window in which to make any appeal, the court said.
"This is not the end of the road," May said. She confirmed Abu Qatada would remain held in British prison custody while a decision is made.
May has not specified what Britain would do if it loses any appeal, though it is likely Abu Qatada would be freed from prison and monitored under a surveillance program which requires those suspected of involvement in terrorism, but not charged with any crime, to abide by a curfew and wear an electronic anklet.
Abu Qatada's lawyer, Gareth Peirce, said the European court had sent a clear message that it would be wrong to prosecute a suspect on "evidence emanating from torture."
Peirce said she hoped Britain would not appeal and that the U.K. had been wrong to press to have her client deported since 2005.
"It would indeed be disappointing if the implications of this judgment were not carefully and adequately digested and the United Kingdom were to continue a challenge which flies so directly in the face of internationally accepted standards," she said.
Britain's Special Immigration Appeals Commission has previously been told Abu Qatada also was suspected of links to a bomb plot in Strasbourg, France, and to the raising of funds for terrorism in Chechnya.
In their ruling, the European judges based in Strasbourg said they did not accept Abu Qatada's claims that he would face ill treatment or torture at the hands of Jordanian authorities if sent there for trial, citing recent agreements between Jordan and the U.K.
But the judges warned that evidence in his case had been obtained by torturing his co-accused.
"The court found that torture was widespread in Jordan, as was the use of torture evidence by the Jordanian courts," the ruling said. "In relation to each of the two terrorist conspiracies ... the evidence of his involvement had been obtained by torturing one of his co-defendants."
Judges said evidence obtained through torture is illegal under international law and is also unreliable. The ruling said "there was a high probability that the incriminating evidence would be admitted ... and that it would be of considerable, perhaps decisive, importance."
Britain's highest court had ruled in 2009 that Abu Qatada should be deported to Jordan, despite fears over his potential mistreatment.
Human rights group Liberty urged the British government to make efforts to have Abu Qatada prosecuted in Britain.
"The court found that torture and evidence obtained that way is widespread" in Jordan, Shami Chakrabarti, the group's director, said in a statement. "So it is clear that, if Abu Qatada is to be tried for terrorism, this should happen in a British court without further delay."
British Prime Minister David Cameron will call for reform of the European court in a long-planned speech next week at the Strasbourg-based Council of Europe. He has frequently complained over the human rights court's rulings and said it had made him "physically ill" when Britain was ordered in 2010 to overturn a centuries-old law and allow prisoners to vote in national elections.
"We have been talking for some time about reform for the European Court of Human Rights," Cameron's spokesman Steve Field said following the Abu Qatada ruling. Field said the court's backlog of about 160,000 cases proved "something isn't working quite as it should be."
Cameron believes the court must focus on the most important cases "rather than essentially being a court of appeal for national judgments," the spokesman said.
