Dorm Room Essentials and Accessories for the Perfect Workspace

Dorm room essentials like task lighting, storage solutions and organizers help create a comfortable and efficient workspace. Most college dorms offer a study desk and chair to each to their residents. If you prefer to create an independent workspace, it is important to give careful thought to its specifications. Keep the shape and size of your dorm room in mind when deciding on a desk.

Corner that Workspace Make use of an unused nook with a strategically placed corner desk. These modular desks are designed to fit into a corner, and are great dorm accessories, especially for small single rooms. A collapsible desk is another great fixture. The desk designs often feature a pullout workspace that can be folded onto the desk when you are not working. These great space-saving dorm room essentials also contain electrical outlets for your computer, laptop, printer and other essential electronic devices.

Solo Storage Space for All Your Work Storage for your textbooks, notes and papers is critical for a good workspace. Modify the existing study desk by adding a desk hutch for all your study material. An alternative is to choose independent storage units. Storage bins made of green materials like rattan or recycled papers are a stylish and environment-friendly option. Papers that are not immediately needed can go into canvas storage bins, which can then be stored at the back of the closet or under the bed.

Light Up Right Lighting is another key consideration when deciding on dorm accessories. Choose a good quality task lamp for late night study sessions. The special hinged design allows you to bend or twist these table lamps in almost any direction. This makes it easy to focus the light on the precise spot where you most need it. These practical and stylish dorm room essentials come in several different colors.

Multipurpose task light organizers are cool alternatives to regular task lamps. Opt for these fun and useful desk lamps for a study light that doubles as a handy desktop organizer. Within the organizer section, there are usually deep cup areas for your stationery and smaller trays that can hold paper clips or rubber bands. Choose eco-friendly CFL light bulbs for your table lamps. These tend to be long-lasting and energy-efficient in comparison to incandescent or halogen bulbs.

Start your search today to find the coolest dorm accessories for your study area.

Ween's Former Frontman Addresses Band's Split

'My decision to leave Ween .... was absolutely not made in haste,' Aaron Freeman tells Rolling Stone.
By James Montgomery

Last month, much to the consternation of those who worship at the altar of the Boognish, Ween's Aaron Freeman announced — rather matter-of-factly — that he was ending Ween, telling Rolling Stone "It was a good run."

That was apparently a surprise to Freeman's longtime musical partner, Mickey "Dean Ween" Melchiondo, who wrote on his Facebook page that the breakup "is news to me, all I can say for now I guess."

But now, in a new statement to Rolling Stone, Freeman addressed the split — and Ween's fans — letting it be known that his decision was not a rash one.

"I want to thank each and every one of you all for your kind words and support. It means a lot. My decision to leave Ween, however interpreted, was absolutely not made in haste," Freeman's statement reads. "It's evolved over a decade's worth of internal and external struggle." Freeman didn't elaborate on those struggles, but did add that he has no bad blood with Melchiondo, whom he founded Ween with more than 25 years ago. And he closed by saying that he'll continue to make music ... minus the Gene Ween moniker.

"Know that I am extremely proud of all that is Ween. And while Mickey and I are going our separate ways, I wish him only the best. I will always have nothing but love and respect for what we created together," the statement reads. "I need to now move on for myself and for my family. I still, as always, look forward to a future filled with music as Aaron Freeman."

China summit seen as counterpunch to US moves

Pool / Reuters

Chinese President Hu Jintao greets Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Thursday.

By Eric Baculinao, NBC News Beijing Bureau Chief

BEIJING ? Will an international summit hosted by China that includes major ?movers and shakers? in Asia, including Iran, Russia, India and Afghanistan, lead to an eastern version of NATO??

?Absolutely not,? Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping told NBC News.?

Cheng was speaking at a media event as some 16 heads of state and top officials, representing more than half of the world?s population, have gathered as members, observers and dialogue partners of the innocuous-sounding Shanghai Cooperation Organization, an economic and anti-terrorist security bloc initiated by China and Russia in 2001.

The meeting comes as China?s rising profile has raised questions about a possible power struggle between the U.S. and Beijing, with the recent Asia tour of U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta highlighting America?s effort to strengthen military alliances and partnerships in the region.

And as a sign of efforts to dilute U.S. influence, the summit granted observer status to Afghanistan on Thursday, a move should position China and the bloc to cultivate ties and play a greater role in the impoverished war-torn country even before NATO ends its military mission by 2014.

Already, Chinese firms have moved into Afghanistan, with designs on the country?s untapped trillion-dollar mineral and energy resources.?

Granting observer status and inviting Afghan President Hamid Karzai will help to strengthen ?political, economic and civilian cooperation between the SCO states and Afghanistan,? said Cheng at the media event.?

?No military alliance? but?
When NBC News asked Cheng if the Shanghai Cooperation Organization would become an ?eastern NATO? or a military alliance in the future, he very firmly downplayed the possibility.

?The main purpose is politics, economics and security and under no circumstances will the SCO become a military organization,? he said..?

?But I personally think that, as the international environment becomes more complex, the SCO should enhance its cooperation with the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), for the sake of peace and stability in Central Asia,? he added.?

It?s extremely rare for Chinese senior diplomats to offer their personal views?to foreign media, and Cheng?s pronouncements may be China?s trial-balloon for new security thinking.?

The Collective Security Treaty Organization, of which China is not a member, is a defense alliance formed in 1992 by Russia and former Soviet Republics, which Russia has been trying to reinvigorate in recent years, with stronger military contingents to counter the ?eastward?expansion of NATO,? among other threats.?

By using the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as a vehicle to coordinate closely with the Collective Security Treaty Organization, China may be hoping to benefit from stronger military ties with Russia, while avoiding the pitfalls of a formal military alignment.?

Russia's President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Hu Jintao shake hands before a meeting at a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Beijing, on Thursday.

?It is my personal view,? Vice-Minister Cheng emphasized to NBC News, ?but I will try to push for it."

?The peace and stability of Central Asia is related to China?s core interests, we will not allow the unrest in West Asia and North Africa to spread to Central Asia,? he said, referring to the threat of Arab-style upheavals.

Tiananmen activist found dead under suspicious circumstances

?America should not worry?
?I don?t think America should worry about China?s Central Asia strategy,? said Professor Shi Yinhong, a leading international affairs expert at Renmin University, one of China?s top research institutions.?

?There is no possibility for SCO to become a formal military alliance like NATO, but there can be greater security cooperation among SCO?s member-countries,? he told NBC News.?

Nonetheless, Shi conceded there are ?some elements" of counter-balancing strategy in China?s latest moves. ??

?China has neither the?stomach?nor the?power to confront America?s strategic advantage in East Asia, but China has the capability to improve cooperation in Central Asia,? he said.?

?China?s difficulty in East Asia is a motivation for China to do good diplomacy in Central Asia, otherwise things will become very difficult for China,? he explained.?

Wisconsin recall vote to resonate in presidential race

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (Reuters) - The battle over whether to recall Wisconsin's Republican governor, Scott Walker, has sharply divided the state and become a nationally watched test of his party's push to limit government, slash spending and challenge public-sector labor unions.

Tuesday's recall vote also has the attention of two very interested outsiders: Democratic President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney, who are gearing up for their November 6 showdown for the White House.

Whatever happens when Wisconsin voters decide whether Walker should be replaced by Democrat Tom Barrett, the repercussions promise to echo deep into the presidential campaign.

At a time when national polls show Obama and Romney in a virtual tie, both sides see the wrangling in Wisconsin as a chance to organize and gain early momentum in a politically divided state that could be crucial in determining who wins the presidency.

The recall battle has raged for months, sparked by Walker's elimination last year of most collective bargaining rights for public-sector unions. That led to huge street protests in Madison, the state capital, and to the recall effort that will culminate in Tuesday's vote.

Walker's national supporters see the recall as a referendum on his take-no-prisoners brand of fiscal conservatism, and both sides in the presidential race plan to scour Tuesday's results to gauge the mood of the electorate heading into November's bigger battles.

"The vote here will definitely be seen as a harbinger of things to come," said Wisconsin-based Republican consultant Mark Graul. "The winning side will have tremendous momentum, and there will be implications far beyond Wisconsin."

Wisconsin has not backed a Republican in a presidential election since it went for Ronald Reagan in 1984, but Republicans hope a recall win will demoralize Democrats and sharply boost Romney's hopes.

Most recent polls have shown Walker ahead of Barrett, who is the mayor of Milwaukee, by about 7 percentage points in the recall election. But in a reflection of how difficult it can be to read the political tea leaves in a "swing" state such as Wisconsin, polls have shown Obama ahead of Romney by 6 to 10 points.

Obama easily captured Wisconsin by 14 percentage points in the 2008 election, when he defeated Republican John McCain. Two years later, Republicans in Wisconsin roared back to elect Walker, defeat Democratic U.S. Senator Russ Feingold and take over the state legislature.

"If the governor is successful" in warding off a recall, "it will show the mood of voters is closer to where it was in 2010 than in 2008," Graul said. "And that could portend trouble for Obama here and in other similar states, like Ohio," another Midwestern state that will be perhaps the most significant battleground in the presidential race.

'ROCK STAR FOR THE RIGHT'

Walker's bulldozing approach to cutting state budgets has made him what Barrett derisively calls "a rock star for the far right."

Walker's rising status in the Republican Party has been evident as fellow Republican governors such as Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Chris Christie of New Jersey have appeared with him in Wisconsin.

Former President Bill Clinton, a Democrat, campaigned in Milwaukee for Barrett on Friday, attacking Walker's "divide and conquer" approach to governing and warning that Walker's conservative allies will be emboldened if he wins.

The Wisconsin recall has offered another glimpse of how unfettered spending by partisan groups outside the campaigns can drive the conversation in elections - a poignant message as such groups have begun spending what they estimate will be hundreds of millions of dollars on the presidential race.

Conservative groups such as Americans for Prosperity, funded by the billionaire conservative brothers Charles and David Koch, have poured millions of dollars into Wisconsin and plastered the state's airwaves with anti-Barrett ads. It is part of an effort to make a statement for their conservative cause - and set a tone for the presidential election.

Walker has raised $31 million to Barrett's $4.2 million, and by late April about two-thirds of Walker's 2012 donations had come from out-of-state donors, according to finance reports compiled by the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, which tracks money in state politics.

"If Governor Walker survives this, then national Republican and conservative leaders are going to see him as the spearhead for a movement," said Joe Heim, a political scientist at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Romney and Obama have avoided much involvement in the Wisconsin race, perhaps a sign that the presidential candidates are not willing to risk being tied too closely with either side.

When Romney was in Wisconsin to campaign in the state's April 3 presidential primary he called Walker a "hero." Obama endorsed Barrett in a brief statement after the May 8 Democratic primary but has said nothing publicly.

Even some Democrats think Barrett has run an ineffective, uninspiring campaign with his attack on the governor's leadership that moved beyond Walker's push for anti-union legislation.

Barrett has targeted Walker's record on creating jobs and raised questions about a criminal probe into whether Walker's aides when he was Milwaukee County executive did political fundraising on public time.

But after months of polarized battle over Walker's agenda, most Wisconsin voters seem to have made up their minds. A recent Marquette University law school poll said just 3 percent of voters remain undecided; a Democratic poll this week put the figure at 1 percent.

That makes voter turnout a potentially huge factor in the recall vote. Both sides have promised unprecedented get-out-the-vote operations.

"We've said all along this will be very close and will be decided by turnout, and we think we'll have the most effective turnout operation," Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate said.

While Democrats have a slight edge in voter registration in Wisconsin, Republicans seem to have at least a slight edge in enthusiasm. The Marquette poll found 91 percent of Republicans were "absolutely certain" to vote, compared with 83 percent of both Democrats and independents.

'A DRY RUN'

"When I make calls, I get Republicans who are really angry this is happening. The Democrats are mad too, but I don't think they are as passionate about it," said Chris Johnson, a retired teacher who volunteers at a Walker field office in La Crosse.

Walker has opened 22 offices around the state to direct his turnout operations, and he said volunteers have made more than 2 million calls to voters - more than during his entire 2010 race.

Volunteers made more than 200,000 contacts with voters on a recent weekend day, and other Midwestern state Republican parties are setting up their own phone banks for Walker.

Volunteers with the state Democratic Party knocked on 100,000 doors that same weekend day, and labor groups also have set up their own networks of more than two dozen field offices.

The turnout operations will serve as a test run for November's presidential contest. Tate said there was significant overlap, for example, between the state Democrats' field staff and Obama's campaign.

Some Wisconsin Democrats have grumbled about the lack of support from the national party.

The Republican Governors Association was one of the biggest spenders in the race, pumping in nearly $8 million, while the Democratic National Committee only sent out a late fund-raising appeal last week.

State officials are predicting a big turnout on Tuesday, and Democrats are targeting people who voted in 2008 but not 2010. They are hoping to get 150,000 to 200,000 recall voters to the polls who did not cast a ballot in 2010 - when Walker won by about 100,000 votes.

The risk is that the losers will be demoralized after the intensity of the recall fight, making it harder to get them back to work in the campaigns for November's presidential election.

"It's very easy to burn out the average political volunteer. I'm not sure how easy it will be to get people back through the door in September," said Brian Westrate, the Republican chairman in Wisconsin's Eau Claire County. "But it will be a lot easier if we win."

Cancer therapy that boosts immune system ready for wider testing

ScienceDaily (June 2, 2012) ? Two clinical trials led by Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center researchers in collaboration with other medical centers, testing experimental drugs aimed at restoring the immune system's ability to spot and attack cancer, have shown promising early results in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer, melanoma, and kidney cancer. More than 500 patients were treated in the studies of two drugs that target the same immune-suppressive pathway, and the investigators say there is enough evidence to support wider testing in larger groups of patients.

Results of the Phase I clinical trials will be published online June 2 in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented at the 2012 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (Abstracts #2509 and #2510).

"Based on the positive response rates to these drugs and longevity of many of these responses, we believe that new clinical trials should move forward," says Suzanne Topalian, M.D., professor of surgery and oncology at Johns Hopkins. Preliminary analysis shows that, among responding patients who were followed for more than one year, responses were maintained for more than one year in two-thirds of those treated on one trial and in half of those in the other trial.

The immune-based therapies tested in the two clinical trials, both made by Bristol-Myers Squibb, aim not to kill cancer cells directly, but to block a pathway that shields tumor cells from immune system components able and poised to fight cancer.

The pathway includes two proteins called programmed death-1 (PD-1), expressed on the surface of immune cells, and programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1), expressed on cancer cells. When PD-1 and PD-L1 join together, they form a biochemical "shield" protecting tumor cells from being destroyed by the immune system. Another protein involved in the pathway and also expressed by cells in the immune system, programmed death ligand -2 (PD-L2), was originally discovered by Johns Hopkins investigators.

To make cancer cells more vulnerable to attack by the immune system, investigators tested each of two drugs -- BMS-936558, which blocks PD-1, and BMS-936559, which blocks PD-L1 -- in separate clinical trials conducted at multiple U.S. hospitals. The drugs are given intravenously in an outpatient clinic every two weeks, and patients can remain on the treatment for up to two years.

The PD-1 blocking drug was tested in 296 patients with various advanced cancers who had not responded to standard therapies. Of those patients receiving the anti-PD-1 therapy, 240 who started treatment by July 2011 were analyzed for tumor response. Significant tumor shrinkage was seen in 14 of 76 (18 percent) non-small cell lung cancer patients, 26 of 94 (28 percent) melanoma patients and nine of 33 (27 percent) kidney cancer patients.

In this trial, some patients experienced stable disease for six months or more, including five of 76 (seven percent) lung cancer patients, six of 94 (six percent) melanoma patients and nine of 33 (27 percent) kidney cancer patients. The investigators say that additional clinical studies will be needed to determine the drug's potential impact on survival.

"This level of response in patients with advanced lung cancer, which is typically not responsive to immune-based therapies, was unexpected and notable," says Julie Brahmer, M.D., associate professor of oncology at Johns Hopkins.

The anti-PD-L1 therapy also showed responses among 207 treated patients. Five of 49 (10 percent) non-small cell lung cancer patients, nine of 52 (17 percent) melanoma patients, and two of 17 (12 percent) kidney cancer patients responded.

"The positive results from both drugs give us a good indication that the PD-L1/PD-1 pathway is an important target for cancer therapy," says Topalian.

The anti-PD1 therapy caused serious toxicities in 41 of 296 (14 percent) patients. Many of the toxicities were immune-related, including colon inflammation, thyroid abnormalities and three deaths from pneumonitis (lung inflammation). The investigators say they are working with colleagues across the country to develop better methods for early detection and effective treatment of pneumonitis. Other less severe toxicities included fatigue, itching and rash. The anti-PD-L1 therapy caused nine percent serious toxicities and no deaths.

Among patients receiving anti-PD-1, tumor samples collected from 42 study patients before they received the experimental therapy were evaluated at Johns Hopkins Medicine for molecular markers that may correlate with clinical response. The investigators found PD-L1, the partner protein to PD-1, in 25 of the 42 samples. Nine of the 25 patients with PD-L1-positive tumors experienced tumor shrinkage as compared with none of the patients with PD-L1 negative tumors.

"These early results indicate that PD-L1 expression in pretreatment tumor biopsies may correlate with clinical response to anti-PD-1 therapy, but more work needs to be done to confirm this, " says Brahmer.

The two therapies targeting the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway are in the same class of so-called "antibody therapies," which are made of proteins that target and bind to certain molecules on the cell surface. Other antibody therapies include such drugs as Erbitux, Herceptin, and Rituxan.

"We have just scratched the surface of laboratory and clinical research on these drugs," says Topalian.

Ultimately, they envision boosting the effectiveness of the therapy by combining it with other anti-cancer agents, including cancer vaccines.

Funding for the clinical studies was provided by Bristol-Myers Squibb and Ono Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd. Research support was provided by grants (CA142779 and CA006973) from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Melanoma Research Alliance.

(AP) ? Aung San Suu Kyi turned her attention to Myanmar's long-standing refugee crisis Saturday, telling thousands of people at a sprawling camp on Thailand's border that their plight has not been forgotten.

Inside the Mae La refugee camp, home to about 45,000 people who have fled war at home, crowds thronged Suu Kyi's convoy, shouting, "Long live Mother Suu!" The beating of traditional drums heralded her arrival and departure.

Her six-day journey this week is the first trip abroad in 24 years for Suu Kyi, who this year made the transition from former political prisoner to opposition parliamentarian. The 1991 Nobel Peace Prize winner has used her tour of Thailand primarily to draw attention to the plight of her compatriots abroad.

"I have not forgotten you while you are living in another country," Suu Kyi told the cheering crowd inside the camp of bamboo and thatched huts, which sits at the base of mist-shrouded mountains. She visited a health clinic at the camp and listened to a presentation by camp leaders.

Asked to comment on her visit to the camp, Suu Kyi told The Associated Press: "It's not a problem to be solved with emotions. We have to solve it practically."

The part of the Thai border where the camp is located is home to up to 140,000 ethnic Karen refugees.

The Karen have been waging a guerrilla war for greater autonomy since Burma, as Myanmar used to be known, obtained independence from Britain in 1948 ? one of the longest-running insurgencies in the world.

In recent weeks, however, the group has been in negotiations with the government to end the fighting. Last month, leaders from the Karen National Union met with President Thein Sein's military-backed government as well as Suu Kyi to firm up a cease-fire they agreed to in January.

Refugees were not Suu Kyi's only focus in Thailand. She also visited the town of Mahachai, outside Bangkok, home to Thailand's largest population of Burmese migrants. Many of the 2.5 million Burmese migrants crossed the borders illegally to work low-skilled jobs for long hours at pay below their Thai counterparts. They typically lack health and social security benefits.

Myanmar's sputtering economy, in ruins after half a century of military rule and years of harsh Western sanctions, has led to huge unemployment and has forced millions of people to seek jobs abroad.

The trip marks a dramatic vote of confidence by Suu Kyi in Myanmar's new reform-minded government, whose rule contrasts starkly with that of the former military junta. Even when she was not under house arrest or imprisoned under the former regime, Suu Kyi had always refused to leave the country, fearing the ruling generals would not let her return.

Suu Kyi has repeatedly said she believes Thein Sein is truly committed to democratic reform, but this week she warned the international community to exercise caution and a "healthy skepticism," saying the nation's all-powerful military was still a force "to be reckoned with."

Western nations have begun suspending harsh economic sanctions that once helped isolate the now-defunct military regime, but critics say much more needs to be done. Hundreds of political prisoners remain behind bars, fighting with ethnic Kachin rebels is continuing in the north, and according to the United Nations, at least 417,000 refugees are still afraid to return to Myanmar.

The vast majority of those refugees live in Thailand, Malaysia, India and Bangladesh.

Suu Kyi spent 15 out of 22 years locked under house arrest by the former military regime, during which time she occasionally spoke to the outside world through audio and video messages. She was granted freedom after Myanmar held elections in 2010 and was elected to parliament in April.

She is due to return to Myanmar on Sunday, but next month, she flies to five countries in Europe, including Norway, where she will formally accept her Nobel Peace Prize, 21 years after winning it.

Assad says foreigners plotting to destroy Syria

President Bashar al-Assad said Sunday that his government faces a foreign plot to destroy Syria, and blamed "monsters" for the Houla massacre, in a rare televised speech delivered in parliament.

Assad's accusations came as Arab leaders called on the United Nations to act to stop bloodshed in Syria and France raised the prospect of military action against Damascus under a UN mandate.

"The masks have fallen and the international role in the Syrian events is now obvious," Assad said in his first address to the assembly since a May 7 parliamentary election, adding the polls were the perfect response "to the criminal killers and those who finance them".

The embattled leader, who was greeted with warm applause from lawmakers, said actrocities like the May 25-26 massacre of at least 108 people near the town of Houla, in central Syria, were committed by "monsters".

"What happened in Houla and elsewhere (in Syria) are brutal massacres which even monsters would not have carried out," he said.

Assad, dressed in a smart suit and tie, also paid tribute to civilian and military "martyrs" of the violence in Syria, saying their blood was not shed in vain.

"We are not facing a political problem but a project to destroy the country," Assad said, adding there will be "no dialogue" with opposition groups which "seek foreign intervention."

"Syria is open to all Syrians regardless of their views, but terrorism can not be part of the political process and we must fight against terrorism to heal the nation," Assad said, dismissing the impact in Syria of uprisings sweeping the Arab world.

On Saturday, violence in Syria killed 89 people, including 57 soldiers, the largest number of casualties the military has suffered in a single day since an uprising began in March 2011, a watchdog said.

The casualties also included 29 civilians and three army defectors killed in various parts of the country in shelling by regime forces or in clashes or gunfire, said the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

As Arab leaders called for UN action in Syria, France, which spearheaded an air assault against Moamer Kadhafi's forces last year, said it has not excluded military intervention in the country.

France "has not excluded military intervention" in Syria, but only under a United Nations mandate, Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Sunday.

Speaking in Singapore at an Asian security summit, the minister also urged Russia to drop its backing for Assad.

He said that "the Russians have to understand that the future of Syria is not to be considered" with Assad still in power.

"Until then we have to increase pressure, increase sanctions, mobilise public opinion and isolate (Assad) as much as possible -- and make those who still support him lose interest, and I'm thinking of Russia of course," Le Drian said.

On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin stood firm against growing pressure over Moscow's position on Syria, opposing foreign military intervention and raising doubts about the effectiveness of sanctions.

Washington and Moscow agreed on the need to work together on Syria, a US official said following a phone conversation between US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"Her message to him was: 'We've got to start working together to help the Syrians with Syria's political transition strategy. And I want our people to work together on ideas in Moscow, Europe, in Washington, wherever we need to'."

At a ministerial meeting in the Qatari capital Doha, international peace envoy Kofi Annan warned: "The spectre of an all-out war with a worrying sectarian dimension grows by the day."

"The situation is complex and it takes everyone involved in the conflict to act responsibly if the violence is to stop. But the first responsibility lies in the Syrian government and President Assad," he said.

Earlier, the Arab League's ministerial committee on Syria had called on Annan, who met Assad earlier this week, to set a deadline for the terms of his peace initiative to be met.

"We request Mr Annan to set a time frame for his mission because it is unacceptable that massacres and bloodshed continue while the mission is ongoing indefinitely," Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Al-Thani said.

"We demand the UN Security Council refer the six-point (Annan plan) to Chapter VII so that the international community could assume responsibilities," he added.

Chapter VII outlines action the Security Council might take, including military force, in response to threats to international peace, breaches of the peace and acts of aggression.

Tensions from Syria have also spilled across into neighbouring Lebanon, where clashes between pro- and anti-Damascus gunmen left 14 dead and 48 wounded over the weekend in the northern city of Tripoli, security officials said.

The Observatory says as many as 2,300 of the more than 13,400 people killed in Syria since the uprising erupted in March 2011 have died since the so-called ceasefire began on April 12.

Because of the worsening violence and Assad's failure to meet commitments under an agreed peace plan, the United States has warned that it may not agree to renew the UN observer mission when its mandate expires on July 20.

Small Business Productivity Surges in May | Best Outsourcing Partners

Small businesses are growing, but hiring is not keeping pace. Increased efficiency is the reason, says SurePayroll?s Michael Alter.

shutterstock images

The results of this month?s SurePayroll Small Business Scorecard?were encouraging and frustrating at the same time. On one hand, the results of our Scorecard survey found 9 in every 10 small businesses experiencing growth. Yet hiring was down 0.1% month over month, and it?s down 1.5% year over year.

How do we account for this split? Why is there growth, but not hiring?

It appears that productivity has outpaced growth. In fact, 50% of our survey respondents said exactly that?revenue is increasing but productivity is also increasing, so hiring is not needed right away.

This is, in some ways, good news for small businesses. They have successfully taken advantage of technology as they?ve come out of the Great Recession, so that they can do more with less. They are using tools that allow for more efficiency, whether it?s for getting contracts signed, tracking shipments, running payroll, or managing customers. Small business owners have shown their ingenuity and resilience, maneuvering through one of our tougher economic periods without any real guidance from the government.

As a business owner and operator, it?s not a bad thing when you?re growing and your productivity is growing even more.

At the same time, it?s a problem for the economy because small businesses are not hiring. The economy needs hiring, yet many small businesses currently aren?t. When the interests of small businesses get out of line with those of the economy, it becomes hard to make progress.

It makes for an unusual recovery. Historically, in a recovery you see hiring bounce back as revenue bounces back. This one is different, making the fallout from the Great Recession that much harder to get a handle on.?

Death by Powerpoint l Improve your presentations with Alexei?Kapterev

Few weeks ago at Information Systems class we watched this slide-show made by Alexei Kapterev. It?s about how to make your powerpoint presentation more dynamic, atractive and interesting. I suggest you to take a look in order to improve your future slides, because as you?ll read on the slide-show: there are 300 million powerpoint users in the world, they do 30 million presentations each day, about a million presentations are going on right now, ?50% of them are unbearable, so lots of people are killing each other with bad presentations now.

?You don?t grow up dreaming to become a ?presentations guru?. My school?graduation?certificate was full of B?s (pun?intended) with only 3 A?s: in compter science, in English and in history. Other subjects didn?t interest me at all. I wanted to continue studying English but then the Soviet Union collapsed and everybody suddenly decided to become economists and managers. And so did I. I majored in finance and went on to?work?at Citibank. It was a very nice job, probably one of the nicest in the late 90?s Russia. It had only one fatal problem: it was booooring. It took me 3 years to figure out that it?s not gonna be any better. So I decided to do something with my life and moved to consulting.

Consulting was much more exciting ? but much more demanding at the same time. At first I was just writing reports but then I had to go and present my findings to the clients. My first presentation was a disaster and my boss, the firm?s partner, gave me an assignment to ?figure out presentations?. It took me two years but after a while I did. Next I?d read Jim Collins? book? From Good to Great?and decided to do for a living what I found I could do best?give presentations.

In 2008 I published a presentation called?Death by PowerPoint?which to my utter surprise went viral, having been viewed by more that 1 million people as of now. It was the greatest reassurance that the path that I?ve chosen is the right one. I?m currently teaching presentations at a one of the Russia?s best business schools, doing corporate workshops, practicing as a consultant, and occasionally working with Mercator, Russia?s leading producer of corporate films, business presentations, and infographics.?
