A STEADY Northern Rivers rental market didn't stop Elders Real Estate in Alstonville smashing its record for the most properties leased in a month.
The agency, which leased properties in Alstonville, Wollongbar and Wardell, usually put new tenants in eight to 10 rental properties each month but chalked up 30 in July.
The real estate's property manager, Krysti MacRae, claimed a range of properties, from small two-bedroom units costing $200 perweek to executive rental properties worth $600, were filled by people who moved to the region for lifestyle and work reasons.
"The region has been attracting people with mid-year contracts who are starting work on the bypass," she said.
"Alstonville is a really central location where one person can work in Lismore and the other can work in Ballina.
"Other people are re-locating to the area to raise families here because it has a lovely community feel."
Neil Millynn moved to Wollongbar because it was a central location to run his business, Ducted Air Solutions, a hygiene organisation which sanitises industrial air-conditioners.
"It's central to the area we choose to service, it's a nice community and it's close to the highway, so it only takes us two hours to get to Brisbane," he said.
However, not all real estate agencies broke rental records last month.
Two weeks ago, Ray White real estate in Alstonville closed down and passed on two tenants to Elders.
First National Real Estate Wal Murray & Co in Lismore and LJ Hooker Ballina both reported no change in their rental markets last month.
LJ Hooker Alstonville property manager Victor Linardon said his agency experienced a small spike in demand for rentals in early July but slumped later in the month.

Wildfires blaze across drought-plagued Oklahoma
OKLAHOMA CITY (Reuters) - Wildfires burned out of control on Friday in Oklahoma, destroying homes and shutting down highways in a state that has suffered 18 straight days of 100-plus degree temperatures and persistent drought.
Emergency officials counted 11 different wildfires around the state, with at least 65 homes destroyed in parched areas north and south of Oklahoma City and south of Tulsa.
Oklahoma joins several states that have been plagued by wildfires this summer, including Colorado, Arkansas and Nebraska. Fires are being fed by a widespread drought.
Nearly two-thirds of the contiguous United States was under some level of drought as of July 31, according to the Drought Monitor, a weekly report compiled by U.S. climate experts.
Interstate 44, historic Route 66 and state highways were closed, but no deaths were reported in the Oklahoma fires.
Low humidity, strong southerly winds and drought conditions enabled the wildfires to spread quickly across treetops, said Michelann Ooten, deputy director of the state's Office of Emergency Management.
"It's just a very difficult situation we're facing that's all weather related," Ooten said.
Governor Mary Fallin, who earlier in the day invoked a statewide ban on outdoor burning after declaring a state of emergency for the state's 77 counties, told Reuters fire conditions may be worse on Saturday.
"The fire danger might be even higher," she said.
Oklahoma has contacted neighboring states for help, but they are contending with their own wildfire threats and no out-of-state help is on its way, she said.
"There's fires in Arkansas. There's fires in Kansas and Texas. Everybody else is on high heat alert," she said.
The heat in Oklahoma City, the state capital, has reached historic levels.
On Friday, Oklahoma City tied its all-time record for the highest temperature ever recorded when the thermometer reached 113 Fahrenheit (45 Celsius), a mark last recorded in the Dust Bowl days in 1936, according to the National Weather Service in Norman, Oklahoma.
Volunteer fire departments have made a public plea for Gatorade donations to keep their crews hydrated in the scalding conditions.

Romney Explains 'Culture' Remark, Blames Media for Bad Press ...
(CNN) ? Mitt Romney said Tuesday he wasn?t denigrating the culture of Palestinians when he suggested at a fund-raiser that Israel?s culture played a role in its economic success.
Romney?s comments, made Monday, drew sharp criticism from Palestinian leaders, who blasted them as ?racist statements.?
I?m not speaking about, did not speak about, the Palestinian culture, or the decisions made in their economy,? Romney clarified in an interview with Fox News. ?That?s an interesting topic that deserves scholarly analysis, but I actually didn?t address that. I certainly don?t plan to address that during my campaign. Instead, I will point out, the choices a society makes have a profound impact on the economy and the vitality of that society.?
On Monday, Romney made a comparison between the per capita GDPs of Israel and Palestinian-controlled areas at a high-dollar fund-raiser in central Jerusalem.
?As you come here and you see the GDP per capita, for instance, in Israel which is about $21,000 dollars, and compare that with the GDP per capita just across the areas managed by the Palestinian authority, which is more like $10,000 per capita, you notice such a dramatically stark difference in economic vitality,? Romney said.
(Figures on the United Nations? website actually indicate a much greater disparity between Israel and the occupied Palestinian territory. Israel had a per capita GDP of $27,060 in 2009, while the 2009 per capita GDP of the occupied Palestinian territory was listed as $1,367.)
Citing the book ?The Wealth and Poverty of Nations,? Romney detailed his interpretation of author David Landes? thesis.
?He says if you can learn anything from the economic history of the world, it?s this: culture makes all the difference. Culture makes all the difference. And as I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things.?
While Romney has cited Landes? book in speeches before, and included a passage about it in his own book ?No Apology,? his remark Monday drew a sharp reaction from Sa?eb Erekat, chief Palestinian negotiator and a member of the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization.
?This man, before he came here, he should have got some education about Israelis, Palestinians, and the region,? Erekat said. ?The Romney statements on Jerusalem and the racist statements about the Israeli culture being superior to the Palestinian culture reflect someone who needs to be educated, who needs knowledge. His statements are serving those extremist in the region now, and will serve extremists unfortunately.?
Romney said in his interview Tuesday that the media reporting on his remarks were ?more interested in finding something to write about? than they were in focusing on important issues like the economy.
?They?ll instead try and find anything else to divert from the fact that these last four years have been tough years for our country,? Romney said.
