How the major US stock indexes fared Friday

The stock market finished one of the worst weeks of the year Friday, pushing Washington to work out a deal to avoid the tax increases and government spending cuts set to take effect Jan. 1. Remarks by re-elected President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner on the looming deadline didn't do much to cheer the market. Stocks finished barely higher for the day.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 4.07 points, or 0.03 percent, to 12,815.39.

The Standard & Poor's 500 rose 2.34 points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,379.85

The Nasdaq composite rose 9.29 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,904.87.

For the week:

The Dow is down 277.77 points, or 2.1 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 34.35 points, or 2.4 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 77.26 points, or 2.6 percent.

For the year:

The Dow is up 597.83 points, or 4.9 percent.

The S&P is up 122.25 points, or 9.7 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 299.72, or 11.5 percent.

Spottiswoode Hotel | consider the sauce

Spottiswoode Hotel, 62 Hudsons Rd, Spotswood. Phone: 9391 1330

Quite a few months before our fine Sunday lunch at the Spottiswoode Hotel, we?d dropped in merely in pursuit of ATM facilities.

The Consider The Sauce ethos fully embraces bare-bones, old-school pubs, but in this case the gloomy vibe saw us heading for the exit as soon as our business was done.

Since then, the place has undergone a comprehensive makeover.

We?ve been hearing good things about it.

We?ve checked out the menu at the pub?s website, and found it to be meaty, matey and very good-looking.

We?ve been hearing good things, too, about the size, quality and price of the joint?s Sunday roast deal ? Thanks, Sue! ? so we?re upbeat for our visit.

The renovations have been drastic.

There?s a lot roomy space amid the three co-joined interior eating/drinking spaces.

There?s a lot of wood and vintage brick, comfy-looking armchairs, a big fireplace and a sweet spot outside with umbrellas and a woodfired oven.

And there?s even a room off to the side with pinball machines, into which we later pump a handful of gold coins.

It all looks great and we find the service matches.

The menu runs to a savvy list of pub grub classics and more priced around the $20 mark for main courses.

There?s specials during the week ? steak and a drink on Mondays, F&C and a drink on Tuesdays, parma and a drink on Wednesday and curry and a drink on Thursdays, all for $15. We spy, too, another special scrawled on one of the mirrors ? $16 for a whole grilled with salad and chips.

But we?re here for the $10 roast.

Thus continues this year?s Consider The Sauce romance of the roast that has taken in the Famous Blue Raincoat, the Footscray Club, Bruno?s Coffee Lounge and even New Zealand.

The Spottiswoode roast deal is as good as any.

The serves look a tad modest, but that turns out to be all about the large plates.

The vegetables ? nice selection, cooked but not mushy ? are really tasty.

The meat ? it?s lamb on the day we visit ? is tender and plentiful, although we seem to have struck a portion of the animal that?s quite fatty. No matter.

The gravy is dark and rich.

The spuds are fall-apart tender ? if we have any regrets it?s that we don?t get more than the two halves each we are provided.

But that?s a minor issue considering the price, terrific atmosphere and really fine service that sees the needs of each and every table met with aplomb by numerous staff members.

We?re keen to return to explore the regular menu.

British man dies in seal trip boat tragedy near Cape Town, South Africa

A BRITISH man has died after a charter boat on a seal-watching tour capsized near Cape Town in South Africa.

Officials yesterday confirmed the death of Peter Philip Hyett, 64, who was a passenger on the catamaran Miroshga when it overturned at about 2:15pm on Saturday. A crew member also died.

The accident occurred in rough Atlantic Ocean waters about two miles from Hout Bay ? a popular tourist destination south of Cape Town.

The married man from the Vale of Glamorgan, in Wales, was on the final day of a two-week holiday in South Africa with wife Suzanne, 63, and daughter Helen, 37, when the tragedy struck.

Navy divers also found a second body yesterday morning confirmed as that of South African crew member John Roberts.

At least 24 of the 40 people on board, which included British, French and South African nationals, were taken to hospital with injuries.

Mr Hyett?s body was recovered, but he was declared dead on arrival at the National Sea and Rescue Institute (NSRI) Hout Bay sea rescue station.

An autopsy is due to be carried out today to determine the exact cause of death.

Mr Hyett?s wife and daughter were taken to Groote Schuur and False Bay hospitals respectively in Cape Town for treatment, but have since been discharged.

A spokesman from the City of Cape Town, Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, said: ?We are offering them all the care and help we can.?

Two other British women were among the survivors, having been trapped under the boat?s hull for almost four hours.

Lynette Hartmann, 55, and Bronwyn Armstrong, whose age is unknown, survived the terrifying ordeal by finding air pockets that kept them alive in cold 5C waters.

Rescuers only found the trapped British pair after hearing a South African woman, who was also caught underneath the boat, tapping on the hull.

NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon said: ?They had somehow become trapped when the boat flipped and had found an air pocket, which they were using to breathe.

?They were freezing cold as they were wearing just their life jackets and normal clothes.

Both women needed treatment for advanced hypothermia, but were released from hospital early yesterday.

The South African Maritime Safety Authority has been ordered to investigate the cause of the accident. It is believed the vessel may have flipped in rough conditions after being struck by a large wave.

Alternative reports had water leaking into the pleasure boat?s electric engines, causing a loss of power that halted the vessel and led to it flooding and capsizing.

Two other charter boats came to the stricken vessel?s aid.

A British Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokeswoman said: ?Our Consul General went to the port immediately after the accident and we are providing consular assistance to all those who need it.?

The boat had been bound for nearby Duiker Island to see a colony of cape fur seals when it capsized midway through the 45-minute cruise.

The service is run by local firm Southern Ambition Marine Safaris.

In a statement, the tour company?s operations manager Gert Strauss said: ?Our sincerest condolences go to the families of the victims.

?The accident is under official investigation and we are collaborating with the South African Marine Safety Authority and other authorities to see a speedy conclusion to the inquiry.?

Maine Brewery to Expand, Add 15-20 Jobs

LEWISTON, Maine (AP) _ A Maine brewery is planning an expansion that will quadruple its capacity over time.

Baxter Brewing Co. said Monday its brewery in Lewiston will grow from 8,000 barrels to more than 33,000 barrels by the time the expansion is complete.

Company founder and president Luke Livingston says demand has exceeded supply since his small, craft-beer brewery began distributing its beers in early 2011.

Baxter says he's also upgrading his canning line and searching for additional off-site warehouse space.

Livingston says the expansion will result in an additional 15 to 20 brewery jobs in the next 18 months, as well as construction jobs for the brewery expansion.

Restaurant Review: Breakfast At Wahaca | Londonist

Wahaca on Charlotte Street is the latest in London?s seemingly endless Mexican restaurant wave. It?s also the eighth branch of Masterchef alumnus Thomasina Miers? burgeoning mini-empire, and to keep things interesting the owners have introduced a few new things to tempt Fitzrovians through the door: a late-night mezcal bar, a takeaway lunch counter, and a breakfast menu.

Dining at Wahaca can occasionally be a tiring experience (it?s one of those restaurants where eager-beaver staff will often ask ask ?have you been here before?? then attempt to ?explain? the menu), but the waitress on our early morning visit was relaxed, letting us order without interference and making a few recommendations when asked. It was a quiet morning, which might have helped.

The breakfast lived up to the early promise. The huevos rancheros were excellent: eggs served on blue corn tacos (a protein- and antioxidant-rich variant of the familiar yellow ones) and liberally spread with a green tomatillo salsa that had a snap of heat to it (a side order of avocado helped to temper the piquancy). Less impressive was the breakfast burrito ? a heaving flour tortilla stuffed with egg, spinach, cheese and bacon ? which was a little bland, requiring liberal dashings of habanero salsa to elicit any kind of response from the taste buds. Other items on the menu include a breakfast torta (a sandwich made using a hollowed-out brioche bun stuffed with ), ?Mexican eggs? (scrambled with onions, chili and refried beans) and baked goods including donuts and banana bread.

Wahaca has competition in the local area, not only from established Mexican fast food places like Benito?s Hat and El Burrito, but from the many other restaurants that line Charlotte Street. Yet by serving a good, well-priced breakfast, and doing it early (opening at 8.30am Mon-Fri) the newcomer has made a promising start. If they can keep the service sweet and simple when the crowds move in, then we could easily become regular visitors.

Breakfast for two, with two mains, a coffees, an horchata (a rice-based cinnamon flavoured drink), a side of banana bread and service, came to around ?18.

Wahaca is at 19-23 Charlotte Street, W1T 1RL.
