Alabama hostage standoff enters 3rd full day

MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (AP) ? More than three days after authorities said a gunman shot a school bus driver dead, grabbed a kindergartner and slipped into an underground bunker, the man showed no signs Friday of turning himself over to police.

Speaking into a 4-inch-wide ventilation pipe leading to the bunker, hostage negotiators have tried to talk the gunman, identified by neighbors as Jimmy Lee Dykes, into freeing the 5-year-old boy. One local official said the child had been crying for his parents.

Dykes, a 65-year-old retired truck driver, is accused of pulling the boy from a school bus Tuesday and killing the driver who tried to protect the 21 youngsters aboard. The gunman and the boy were holed up in a small room on his property that authorities likened to a tornado shelter.

"The three past days have not been easy on anybody," Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson said late Thursday. He said authorities were communicating with the suspect. "There's no reason to believe the child has been harmed."

But there were signs that the standoff could continue for some time.

The shelter has electricity, food and TV, according to a state legislator. The police chief said the captor has been sleeping and told negotiators that he has spent long periods in the shelter before.

The shelter was about 4 feet underground, with about 6-by-8 feet of floor space and a PVC pipe that negotiators were speaking through, said James Arrington, police chief of the neighboring town of Pinckard.

"He will have to give up sooner or later because (authorities) are not leaving," Arrington said. "It's pretty small, but he's been known to stay in there eight days."

Midland City Mayor Virgil Skipper said he has been briefed by law enforcement agents and has visited with the boy's parents.

"He's crying for his parents," he said. "They are holding up good. They are praying and asking all of us to pray with them."

Republican Rep. Steve Clouse, who represents the Midland City area, said he visited the boy's mother Thursday and that she is "hanging on by a thread."

"Everybody is praying with her for the boy," he said.

Clouse said the mother told him that the boy has Asperger's syndrome, an autism-like disorder, as well as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. Police have been delivering medication to him through the pipe, he added.

The normally quiet red clay road leading to the bunker was teemed Friday with more than a dozen police cars and trucks, a fire truck, a helicopter, officers from multiple agencies and news media near Midland City, population 2,300.

Police vehicles have come and gone steadily for hours from the command post, a small church taken over for that use

Early Friday, activity picked up when a team in military-style uniforms, many toting weapons, got out of a big van in the pre-dawn chill and moved into a staging area. One appeared to be dog handler.

Dykes was known around the neighborhood as a menacing figure who neighbors said once beat a dog to death with a lead pipe, threatened to shoot children for setting foot on his property and patrolled his yard at night with a flashlight and a firearm.

The chief confirmed that Dykes held anti-government views, as described by multiple neighbors: "He's against the government ? starting with Obama on down."

"He doesn't like law enforcement or the government telling him what to do," he said. "He's just a loner."

Authorities say the gunman boarded a stopped school bus Tuesday afternoon and demanded two boys between 6 and 8 years old. When the driver tried to block his way, the gunman shot him several times and took the 5-year-old boy off the bus.

The bus driver, Charles Albert Poland Jr., 66, was hailed by locals as a hero who gave his life to protect the pupils on his bus.

The school bus remained parked on the dirt road, and trooper spokesman Kevin Cook said investigators were in it collecting evidence Friday morning.

No motive has been discussed by investigators, but the police chief said the FBI had evidence suggesting it could be considered a hate crime. Federal authorities have not released any details about the standoff or the investigation. The mayor said he hasn't seen anything tying together Dykes' anti-government views and the allegations against him.

Dykes had been scheduled to appear in court Wednesday to answer charges he shot at his neighbors in a dispute last month over a speed bump. Neighbor Claudia Davis said he yelled and fired shots at her, her son and her baby grandson over damage Dykes claimed their pickup truck did to a makeshift speed bump in the dirt road. No one was hurt.

The son, James Davis Jr., believes Tuesday's shooting was connected to the court date. "I believe he thought I was going to be in court and he was going to get more charges than the menacing, which he deserved, and he had a bunch of stuff to hide and that's why he did it."

Neighbors described a number of other run-ins with Dykes in the time since he moved to this small rural town near the Georgia and Florida borders, a region known for peanut farming.

A neighbor directly across the street, Brock Parrish, said Dykes usually wore overalls and glasses and his posture was hunched-over. He said Dykes usually drove a run-down "creeper" van with some of the windows covered in aluminum foil.

Parrish often saw him digging in his yard, as if he was preparing to lay down a driveway or building foundation. He lived in a small camping trailer there and patrolled his lawn at night, walking from corner to corner with a flashlight and an assault rifle.

Court records showed Dykes was arrested in Florida in 1995 for improper exhibition of a weapon, but the misdemeanor was dismissed. The circumstances of the arrest were not detailed in his criminal record. He was also arrested for marijuana possession in 2000.

Twitter Currently Experiencing Widespread, Rolling Service Outage [Update: Resolved]

fail-whaleTwitter is currently experiencing a widespread service outage that appears to be intermittent, according to our checks with the web client, third-party apps and website service status checking tools. Other TC staff are able to access the service on and off every few minutes, but it seems like the stream is interrupted, and third-party clients like Tweetbot still appear to be having trouble connecting at all, although they're still able to send and receive direct messages.

Gunman kills Pakistani Sunni leaders in apparent tit-for-tat

KARACHI (Reuters) - A gunman on a motorcycle shot dead three Pakistani Sunni Muslim leaders on Thursday, police said, in the latest apparent tit-for-tat killing in the southern financial hub of Karachi.

Conflict between Sunni and Shi'ite militants has been blamed for many recent killings in Pakistan's largest city.

At least 217 people have been killed this month, police sources say, but they do not know how many qualify as "target killings", the official term for assassinations.

"Three persons riding a bike intercepted (the victims')vehicle ... and one of them shot at persons sitting inside the car through the window pane," Deputy Inspector General of Police Abdul Aleem Jaffry said of the latest killings, which were caught on CCTV and broadcast on television.

He described them as target killings.

"We have no expectations of getting justice," said Qari Mohammad Islam, the Karachi chief of Jamiat-Ulema-e-Islam, one of the largest Sunni political parties.

"This entire nation, the citizens of Karachi, the students and clerics are exhausted from carrying the bodies of our elders... The time is near when we will give a call for everyone to come out into the streets."

Interior Minister Rehman Malik told the Senate on Monday: "I want to alert the people of Pakistan to a possible disaster in Karachi as three groups have planned large-scale militancy."

New Research Suggests Timing of Meals Affects Weight Loss

While many of us still search for the magic bullet that will take and keep away extra pounds, medical science is doing what it can to improve health by unlocking the mysteries of weight control one piece at a time. People counting calories for weight loss may also want to re-think when they eat as a new study finds that eating at certain times of the day produced more weight loss in some study participants who ate the same amount of calories as other participants who ate at different times.

Timing of Food Intake Predicts Weight Loss Effectiveness

Researchers in Spain, encouraged by animal studies that revealed a relationship between time of feeding and weight control, wanted to determine whether the same would hold true in humans. The results of their research, published Tuesday in the International Journal of Obesity demonstrated that among the 420 study participants who ate equal calories in a 20-week weight-loss program, those that ate lunch before or at noon lost an additional five pounds more than participants who ate lunch later in the day.

The research was conducted in nutrition clinics located in the southeastern portion of Spain. Study participants were nearly evenly divided between male and female and also between those who ate lunch before and after noon. All of the participants ate a Mediterranean-style diet, one that includes lots of fruits and vegetables, fish, low dairy and even less red meat.

Study Results Suggest Time of Eating Important, but not Proof

NHS.UK.com explains that at first glance the research results show that the time a person eats their largest meal of the day has a direct effect on boosting weight loss, the results are instead a suggestion of the correlation between the time you eat and the amount of weight loss you can expect.

This study may be a beginning point for further study on the subject, but any future research would need to control variables not monitored in this study, such as randomly assigning study participants to eating their main meal at different times of day. Allowing the participants to maintain their normal eating schedules does not take into account biological or behavioral differences that may have impacted both the weight loss and the participants' normal eating pattern.

Despite headlines to the contrary, such as "Eat Earlier, Lose Weight, " the true value of the study has more to do with learning what factors and variables must be monitored in future studies in any attempt to correlate time of meals with weight loss.

Bottom Line

Frank Scheer, Ph.D. , study co-author, of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, explained to Reuters Health that one of the reasons that eating your main meal earlier in the day rather than in the evening as do most Americans may contribute to better weight loss saying, "One of the other aspects to this is, what we know is glucose tolerance for example -- how well you can deal with sugar in your food -- your body is better able to cope with that in the morning than in the evening."

Yunsheng Ma, MD, Ph.D., MPH , a nutrition researcher at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Mass. and not affiliated with the recent study, advises that people are best served by having a good breakfast and lunch, then eating lightly at dinner.

Weight loss still comes down to burning more calories than you eat.

India Shares Down Early; ICICI Bank Falls Ahead of 3Q Earnings

Indian shares were trading lower early in the session, tracking general weakness in Asian stock markets, with banks due to report fiscal third-quarter earnings later Thursday in focus.

India's biggest private lender ICICI Bank was down 0.7% at 1206.00 rupees ($22.5) ahead of its earnings announcement, as traders booked profits. ICICI Bank had risen 1.1% Wednesday.

A Dow Jones Newswires poll of six analysts forecasts the private lender to report a 21% on-year rise in third-quarter net profit to INR20.89 billion.

At 0417 GMT, the Bombay Stock Exchange's benchmark Sensitive Index was down 54.79 points, or 0.3% to 19950.21 points. The National Stock Exchange's Nifty fell 11.00 points, or 0.2% to 6044.75.

In Asia, stocks traded mostly lower as Japanese, Hong Kong and Australian markets retreated after hitting multi-year highs recently.

Stock market losses came on the heels of the U.S. Federal Reserve's comments overnight that economic activity had paused in recent months. Wall street stocks fell from five-year highs on the remarks. Meanwhile, data showed that the world's biggest economy contracted in the fourth quarter, surprising markets as analysts had forecast growth.

State-run Indian lenders Punjab National Bank and Union Bank of India -- both not part of the Sensex -- will also report earnings later in the day. Punjab National gained 0.3% to 836.50 rupees, while Union Bank of India rose 0.9% to 243.25 rupees.

Index heavyweight Reliance Industries was down 1.0% to 890.00 rupees, while Infosys fell 0.5% to 2780.00 rupees.

Cigarette maker ITC was up 0.8% to 306.00 rupees. State-run Oil & Natural Gas Corp continued Wednesday's rally, rising 0.9% to 341.30 rupees.
