Ever since seeing The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and now the new Hobbit movie, people have wanted Hobbit homes. It?s hard to imagine a dwelling with more natural cozy appeal than the little homes from J.R.R. Tolkien?s classic novels. Round front doors, low ceilings, and curved woodworking galore; these places blend in with their natural surroundings, providing a place many people would be seriously happy to come home to. Now architect Peter Archer has created a Hobbit inspired home for life-long J.R.R. Tolkien fans in Pennsylvania, one which channels the beauty and spirit of the low-set homes, while providing a practical space to enjoy.
The Chester County based family wanted a new space worthy of housing their collection of rare books and Tolkien inspired memorabilia. The house was never intended to be a strict interpretation of the book based homes, but rather one inspired by their design. Archer, who had little knowledge of the stories before starting work, explains:
?Upon starting the project I read the book The Hobbit and watched the Lord of the Rings movies, but more importantly, looked at the range of writings by Tolkien, including amazing sketches he had done to illustrate his work,? Archer says. ?I remember at the start saying that we would be happy to design the structure but we were not going to do a Hollywood interpretation. We wanted it to be timeless. It was built in 2004 but looking at it, you could think it was from 1904 or 1604.?
As it is, the home is a testament to classic architecture and woodworking. Its inner exposed frame wood beams curve gracefully over the main living space and office, while the back window is a gorgeous multi-paned art nouveau affair. See the video below, then head to The NY Daily News for more.
