House Republicans have gathered in Williamsburg, Va., for their winter retreat. The mission: Regroup and reunite for upcoming battles, which include the debt ceiling and now gun control.
In short, as Yahoo News reporter Chris Moody explains, the retreat gives the GOP caucus a chance to reflect on the recent fights over the fiscal cliff and Superstorm Sandy aid package and strategize for 2013.
Gun control will be a big topic back in Washington, too, as lawmakers and lobbyists analyze, spin and make predictions about the future of the sweeping proposals President Barack Obama announced on Wednesday. There is strong opposition not only from Republicans but some Democrats?and certainly from the National Rifle Association.
Also worth noting on Thursday: Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta is scheduled to arrive in London on the final stop of a weeklong trip to Europe;? the U.S. Conference of Mayors Winter Meeting starts in Washington and Vice President Joe Biden will speak; and Teddy Turner, son of media magnate Ted Turner, will launch his campaign to challenge former governor Mark Sanford for the 1st Congressional District seat in South Carolina.
And then there is this: First lady Michelle Obama celebrates her 49th birthday Thursday.
